Tuscany With Children: How to Keep It Slow
Tuscany rewards families who base themselves in a single villa for a week, rather than moving between hotels every two nights.
Tuscany rewards families who base themselves in a single villa for a week, rather than moving between hotels every two nights. This is one of the most consistent patterns in our work.
The instinct, when planning Italy, is to maximise coverage: Florence, then Siena, then San Gimignano, then a couple of villages, then back to Rome. With children, this kind of itinerary fails reliably. Long drives between hotels, packing and unpacking, restaurant meals every night, and the fatigue of constant logistics — all of it absorbs the energy that should go into experiencing the place.
Why a single villa works.
A well-managed Tuscan estate with a pool, a kitchen, a housekeeper and access to a chef on request lets the rhythm settle. Children swim. Adults cook or are cooked for. Day trips into Florence, into the wine country, into the smaller hilltop towns happen when the family feels like it — not on a schedule.
Where in Tuscany.
The Chianti hills between Florence and Siena are central and easy. The Val d'Orcia is more dramatic but further from major airports. The coast at Maremma is quieter and works well for families who want both countryside and beach.
The chef question.
Most villas can arrange a chef for some meals. We usually recommend a chef for arrival night, departure night and one or two dinners in between, with the family eating out or cooking the rest of the time. Full board with a chef every meal often feels heavier than expected.
Length of stay.
Seven nights minimum. Ten is often better. Tuscany is one of the destinations where shorter does not work.
Combining with another stop.
A Tuscan villa week paired with two or three nights in Florence at the start or end is one of our most-arranged family Italy itineraries. Rome and Amalfi we usually push to a separate trip.
