Soneva, Cheval Blanc or JOALI: Different Island Personalities
Three of the most beautiful Maldives properties, suiting genuinely different guests. The match is more important than any one being "best".
Soneva Fushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli and JOALI Maldives are three of the most distinctive properties in the Maldives. They are also three quite different holidays. The choice between them is less about which is "best" and more about which fits the client.
Soneva Fushi.
The original barefoot luxury concept, opened in 1995 and continually evolved since. Located in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve known for its marine life and the manta ray aggregation at Hanifaru Bay (June-November). The villas are large beach properties in a forested setting — no overwater accommodation here. The design aesthetic is intentionally rustic: driftwood, natural materials, no air-conditioning if you choose the more sustainable villa categories. The food is excellent and the environmental commitment is genuine. Soneva Fushi works for travellers who want laid-back, conscious luxury and have at least seven nights.
Cheval Blanc Randheli.
LVMH's Maldives flagship in the Noonu Atoll, opened in 2013. The villas are larger and more polished than at most competitors — both overwater and beach options, all extremely well designed. The food across all four restaurants is genuinely exceptional; the Diptyque-fragranced spa is one of the strongest in the Indian Ocean. The atmosphere is more refined and less rustic than Soneva — designed for travellers who want precise French luxury alongside the island experience. Best for honeymooners and adults; the family programmes exist but are not the strength.
JOALI Maldives.
A newer property (2018) in the Raa Atoll, with a deliberate art-and-design focus — sculpted installations across the island, photography-worthy villas, and a younger, more design-conscious atmosphere. The food and the spa are strong. The property is smaller than Soneva or Cheval Blanc, which produces a more intimate feel. JOALI suits design-led couples and short-stay honeymoons; the design DNA does not always work equally well for families.
Which we recommend, when.
Soneva for clients who want barefoot, conscious luxury and ten nights of slowness. Cheval Blanc for clients who prioritise food, precision and quiet refinement. JOALI for design-led couples and shorter trips. There is no universally best choice. The match matters.
