Maldives: Why the Right Island Matters

There are over 130 resorts in the Maldives, all in beautiful settings. The difference between an excellent stay and a disappointing one is in the property — and the match.

There are over 130 resorts in the Maldives, all in similarly beautiful settings. The difference between an excellent stay and a disappointing one is in the specific property — its personality, its layout, its location, its team. Resort matching is a more substantial part of our Maldives work than the destination itself.

Resort personality.

Maldives resorts genuinely differ in character. Soneva Fushi is barefoot luxury with deep environmental commitment and a quirky, design-led aesthetic — driftwood, no-shoes policy, large beach villas in a forested setting. Cheval Blanc Randheli is precise French luxury with extraordinary food, large villas and a quieter atmosphere. JOALI is design-forward and art-led, with photography-worthy villas. The same resort budget at three different properties produces three different holidays.

Transfer method matters.

Resorts close to Malé airport (within 20-30 minutes by speedboat) are accessible at any time. Resorts requiring seaplane transfers (the further atolls) involve waiting for daylight, weight limits on luggage, and a different rhythm. For families with babies, this is a real consideration. For honeymooners with flexibility, the seaplane is part of the experience.

Villa configuration.

Overwater villas are photogenic but have limitations. Open water access with young children requires constant attention. The sun exposure can be intense without natural shade. Beach villas with private compounds and gardens often work better for longer stays and for families. Our usual recommendation: overwater for three or four nights, beach villa for the remainder.

Atoll considerations.

The South Malé and North Malé atolls have the most resorts and are easiest to access. The Baa Atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with extraordinary marine life. The Raa Atoll and Vaavu Atoll are more remote and quieter. Each has implications for both the journey and the experience.

Family versus honeymoon.

A great family Maldives resort and a great honeymoon Maldives resort are rarely the same property. Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and One&Only Reethi Rah are strong family choices. Cheval Blanc Randheli, JOALI and Anantara Kihavah lean toward honeymoon and adult-only stays.

Operating recommendations.

Among current operating properties, we know well: Soneva Fushi, Cheval Blanc Randheli, JOALI Maldives, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, Patina Maldives, The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli, and One&Only Reethi Rah.
