Lanserhof vs SHA: Different Wellness Philosophies

Lanserhof leans diagnostic and Germanic; SHA leans integrative and Mediterranean. Same category, fundamentally different experiences.

Lanserhof and SHA Wellness Clinic are two of Europe's most-respected medical wellness destinations. They sit in similar marketing categories — extended wellness retreats with clinical infrastructure — but their underlying philosophies differ significantly. Choosing between them comes down to what kind of programme the client actually wants.

Lanserhof — the Mayr philosophy.

Lanserhof (Tegernsee in Germany, Lans in Austria, Sylt on the German coast) builds its programmes on the Modern Mayr Method — a digestive-rest, chewing-focused, structured-eating protocol with origins in Austrian medical wellness. Programmes typically run seven to twenty-one days. The atmosphere is Germanic — precise, clinical in the best sense, with serious medical assessment underpinning the food and movement protocols.

SHA Wellness — the integrative philosophy.

SHA (Spain's Alicante coast, with newer Mexico property and Emirati expansion planned) leans toward integrative medicine — combining nutrition, traditional Chinese medicine elements, energy work, sleep science and longevity programmes. The atmosphere is Mediterranean — sun, sea, white architecture, a softer rhythm than Lanserhof.

Which suits which client.

Clients who want structure, clinical depth and a programme that produces specific physiological outcomes tend to prefer Lanserhof. Clients who want a wellness reset with a softer atmosphere, more variety in the daily programme and a Mediterranean climate tend to prefer SHA. Both produce real outcomes, but the experience of getting there is quite different.

Length of stay.

Lanserhof programmes work meaningfully at seven nights minimum; ten or fourteen produces deeper results. SHA programmes are similar — seven nights as a minimum, with the longer Detox and Longevity programmes running ten to fourteen days. Anything shorter at either property compromises the outcomes.

The location consideration.

Lanserhof Tegernsee is in the Bavarian Alps — beautiful but inward-focused, with the property being the experience. SHA Wellness is on the Spanish coast — the surroundings are warmer and the programme can incorporate outdoor walks and sea access. For clients who find clinical environments confining, SHA's setting may be the better fit.

Combining with a city stay.

Either retreat works well with a softer end — Munich after Lanserhof Tegernsee, Barcelona or Madrid after SHA. We usually advise against more demanding cultural travel immediately after, as the body is in recovery mode.
