Japan in Cherry Blossom Season: What We Tell Our Clients

Cherry blossom season in Japan is one of the most beautiful periods in the travel calendar. It is also one of the most crowded.

Cherry blossom season in Japan typically runs from late March to mid-April, depending on the year and region. Kyoto and Tokyo are usually in sync, with Hokkaido blooming several weeks later. It is genuinely beautiful — and it genuinely requires planning.

Here is what we tell clients who ask about visiting in sakura season:

Book early.

The best hotels in Kyoto — Hoshinoya, Tawaraya, The Ritz-Carlton — are booked out twelve months ahead for peak blossom dates. If you are considering a late-March or early-April trip, start planning in the spring before.

Consider the timing gap.

Cherry blossom peak lasts approximately one week per location. Traveling between multiple cities during sakura creates unpredictability — you may catch perfect bloom in Tokyo but miss it in Kyoto. Building two to three extra days into the itinerary helps.

The crowds are significant, but manageable.

In our experience, clients who have done Japan before find the sakura period manageable because they know how to navigate the city. For first-time visitors, we sometimes suggest going in autumn (mid-October to mid-November) instead.

Private access matters more now.

The difference between navigating Philosopher's Path or Maruyama Park independently versus having a guide who knows the timing, lighting and quieter viewing spots is significant during peak season.

Sakura season is worth it for the right client. It is not, in our view, a season to rush.
