How We Choose a Maldives Resort for Families

Not every Maldives island works equally well for families with young children. Kids' club quality, lagoon safety, villa configuration and dining flexibility shape the right choice.

The Maldives is a strong family destination — but the wrong island choice can compromise the whole trip. There are over 130 resorts now, and they differ significantly in how well they accommodate children.

Lagoon quality.

Some islands sit in calm, shallow lagoons that are ideal for small children to play in safely. Others sit in deeper water with strong currents at the reef edge. For families with children under eight, the lagoon makes a major difference to daily life on the island.

Villa configuration.

Beach villas with their own pool, two bedrooms and a private compound work better for families than overwater villas — which look beautiful but require constant vigilance with young children near open water. We almost always recommend beach villas for under-tens.

Kids' club quality.

Soneva Fushi, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and One&Only Reethi Rah operate genuinely excellent children's programmes — trained staff, structured activities, real engagement. Some other resorts have a small room with toys and call it a kids' club. The difference is significant.

Dining flexibility.

Families with young children often need to eat at 6pm. Resorts with a single main restaurant and fixed service times can be inflexible. Our preferred family properties have multiple restaurants and flexible kitchens.

Transfer method.

Seaplane transfers are an experience, but for families with babies, the seaplane noise and small cabin can be challenging. Resorts within speedboat range of Malé airport sometimes work better.

For families with children under twelve, we currently lean toward Soneva Fushi (Baa Atoll), Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, One&Only Reethi Rah and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa — all of which we know well. Each suits different priorities.
