Bhutan: A Slower, Quieter Asia

Bhutan is one of the few destinations in Asia that has remained genuinely uncrowded. The combination of altitude, monasteries and Amankora-style lodges makes it remarkable.

Bhutan is one of the few destinations in Asia that has remained genuinely uncrowded — not because it is undeveloped, but because the country has deliberately controlled tourist numbers through its Sustainable Development Fee (currently USD 100 per person per night for most international travellers). For the right client, this control is exactly what makes Bhutan compelling.

The journey itself.

Flying into Paro is one of the more dramatic commercial landings in aviation — the runway is tucked between mountains, and pilots need to be specifically certified to fly the route. The arrival sets the tone. The drive from Paro to Thimphu, then to Punakha, then back into the higher valleys, follows a slow Himalayan rhythm.

The Aman option.

Aman operates five lodges across Bhutan — Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, and Bumthang — which together allow an Amankora "circuit" journey moving between them over 8 to 12 nights. This is the framework most of our Bhutan clients choose. Each lodge sits in a different valley with a different elevation, climate and character.

The Six Senses option.

Six Senses Bhutan operates a similar circuit of five lodges in slightly different locations. The two collections suit different travellers — Aman is more minimal, Six Senses is more wellness-integrated. We choose between them based on the client.

The cultural depth.

Bhutan's monasteries — Tiger's Nest above Paro is the famous one — reward visitors who arrive with curiosity rather than a checklist. A morning walk with a Bhutanese guide who can explain the practices, not just the architecture, is what makes the visit memorable.

Best time.

March to May and October to November are the most reliable months for weather and visibility of the higher peaks. December and January are cold but quiet; July to September is monsoon and we usually steer clients away.

Length.

Eight nights minimum. Ten or twelve is the sweet spot. Anything shorter than eight involves enough internal travel that it can feel rushed.
