Autumn in Kyoto and Tuscany
Two of the world's most rewarding autumn destinations, both at their best mid-October to mid-November.
If we were to recommend one season for both Kyoto and Tuscany to a first-time visitor, it would be autumn. The light, the colour, the temperatures, the food in season, and the absence of summer crowds combine to make October and November some of the best travel weeks of the year.
Kyoto in autumn.
Foliage peaks in mid-to-late November in Kyoto, two to three weeks later than the regions north of it. The maples at Tōfuku-ji, the late afternoon light at Eikan-dō, the gardens at Ginkaku-ji and the temple complex at Nanzen-ji are all at their best then. Crowds are significant — autumn is the second-busiest tourism season after cherry blossom — but more manageable than spring because the daylight is shorter and the early-morning window is more decisive.
Tuscany in autumn.
The vendemmia — the wine harvest — is finishing in October. The hilltop towns are quieter than in summer. The light in the Val d'Orcia in late October is the light Tuscany is famous for. The food shifts to truffles, game, mushrooms, and the kitchen rhythm at the better restaurants becomes more interesting.
Combining them in one trip.
This is one of our most-requested patterns. Kyoto in mid-November, then a flight to Italy for late November in Tuscany, is a beautifully sequenced trip. The light, the food and the slower pace at both ends create coherence. We typically allow eight to ten days for each — so seventeen to twenty days total.
Where to stay.
Kyoto: Hoshinoya, The Ritz-Carlton, Aman Kyoto, or Tawaraya, depending on preference. Tuscany: a villa with chef arrangements, or one of the country hotels — Borgo San Felice, Castello di Casole, Castiglion del Bosco.
The pace question.
Autumn rewards slow travellers. The light shifts quickly through the day, the temperatures drop in the evenings, and the moments that matter — the colour at sunrise, the dinner that runs long, the empty garden in late afternoon — happen when you are not rushing.
A note on weather.
Both regions can have rainy days in autumn. Building in flexibility helps. The light after a rainy day, particularly in Tuscany, is exceptional.
